Nom courant — les «secoueurs» — d’une secte religieuse américaine, la United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, fondée par Anne Lee à Manchester en 1747. Ayant émigré en Amérique la même année, «mère Anne» crée, près d’Albany, la première communauté qu’elle préside, secondée par sept anciens. Elle veille à une séparation rigoureuse des deux sexes, car elle voit dans le mariage l’origine et la cause des maux de l’humanité. Les shakers affirment que, tout comme Christ est le second Adam, «mère Anne» est la seconde Ève, incarnée pour le salut des femmes. Leur doctrine de la perfection comporte cinq principes: le célibat, la confession des péchés, la communauté des biens, le renoncement au monde, l’égalité des deux sexes. Les shakers, comme les quakers dont ils se sont séparés, rejettent le service militaire, refusent les sacrements et croient en une inspiration directe du Saint-Esprit.

Ce mouvement «enthousiaste», dont les adeptes connaissent des extases dans lesquelles ils sont secoués rythmiquement (d’où leur surnom), a eu son apogée au milieu du XIXe siècle; il rencontre des difficultés du fait que le principe du célibat l’oblige à se perpétuer par la seule voie du prosélytisme.
